Whimsical statues of a lion, a tortoise, and a hare greet library patrons entering Barr Library, the first branch library in St. Louis built with Carnegie funds. The library was recently renovated and has plenty of books and materials for children, parents, and teachers.

Extensively remodeled in 2004, the Brentwood Public Library has a good children's department, a computer-training room, and wireless Internet access. The library keeps a full schedule of children's, teen, and adult programming throughout the year.

The Saul Brodsky Jewish Community Library stocks 22,000 volumes covering all aspects of Judaism and is considered one of the finest Judaic libraries in the Midwest. The largest branch of the St. Louis City Public Library system, Buder Library opened in July 1998 in its renovated facility. The branch offers an entire floor dedicated solely to youth services, as well as a Teen Lounge, computer facilities, and various meeting rooms available for public use.

Cabanne Library, built in 1906 in the Beaux Arts style using Carnegie funds, offers several cozy reading rooms. Along with the standard collections, the library also offers free access to the Internet.

Built in 1908 and, like many of St. Louis's branch libraries, funded by a Carnegie grant, the Carondelet Library is an impressive building, fronted with classic ionic pillars. The library holds an adult and children's Spanish collection and a Carondelet history file. It also offers Internet access and regular children and adult programs.

Carpenter Library can boast that it is the city's most-used library. It was renovated extensively in the last decade, providing twice the floor space of the original 1927 building. The library offers special English-as-a-second-language collections, including substantial materials in Vietnamese, Chinese, and Serbo-Croation languages.

Opened in the fall of 2006, the Central Express Library caters to those who live and work downtown. Central Library is nearby, so this branch is not intended to be a full-service library. A unique self-service check-out machine is designed to make desk service fast and efficient.

At 26,000 square feet of space, Schlafly Library is the second largest library in the city. On-site parking, comfortable seating areas, several new computers, an extensive meeting facility, and updated collections are among some of the amenities available here.

Spencer Road Branch Library is part of the St. Charles City-County Public Library system.

Serving as the headquarters for all county branch libraries, the St. Louis County Library Headquarters houses an extensive collection of fiction and non-fiction books, the Genealogy/Special Collections department, and a computer lab with more than one dozen terminals for research, word-processing, and Internet use. The library hosts numerous youth and adult programming throughout the year, including storytimes and book clubs.

The library also houses an extensive audio-visual collection featuring a variety of formats, including unabridged and abridged audiobooks on both cassette and CD, musical CDs, DVDs, and VHS videos.

The archiecturally significant central branch of the St. Louis Library, designed by architect Cass Gilbert in a modified Italian Renaissance style and featuring beautiful stained glass windows and hand-stenciled ceilings, is actually several libraries in one. In addition to the main library collections, there are also libraries devoted to humanities, history and genealogy, fine arts, pop culture, rare books, large print, and books-on-tape.

The central branch also offers Bosnian, African, Hispanic, German, and Asian residents access to books and films in their own languages. Children love to check out toys from the community toy box, as well as books from different countries, available from the international book box.
