The Academy of Music Northwest is a a private, nonprofit, part-time music school, offering music classes for children ages three-18. Classes are held on Saturdays for 30 weeks from Sep to May. The program includes 30 weekly classes, a performance class, a children's choir, and a solo performance for qualified performers. Public solo performance and chamber music ensemble performance are also available to children who have accurate pitch and good sight reading skills. Private lessons are available at the school, before or after classes. All classes combine age-appropriate music fundamentals, form, ear training, rhythm, movement, singing, sight reading, and performance.

Students ages 11-18 come in by audition. Basic classes are theory, ear training, composition, history/literature, score reading, conducting, performance class, classical chamber music rehearsals, and performance (instrumental and vocal.) There is a new special program for singers, starting with a one-week summer classical music program for both singers and instrumentalists in July.

Registration is available online or applicants can print and mail the application to the main office: Academy of Music Northwest, 9109 196th Street SW, Edmonds, WA 98026-6333. Upon receipt, a placement interview is scheduled for each new student (open enrollment).

The Alki Community Center offers a wide variety of programs and classes for all ages, including adults. Toddlers and preschoolers can attend arts classes and playclub (school year and summer). Kids can learn cartooning or pottery, take sports and music classes, or attend arts workshops. Teens have a full schedule that includes sports classes, arts, dance, performing arts, movie nights, and a chance to sit on the Teen Advisory Council.

Drop-in activities include ping-pong and pool all day, as well as a drop-in playtime for tots and their parents during the fall and winter. The Community Center also hosts periodic community events like picnics or sports days for youth. A children's playground and playfield are located adjacent to the center.

The center offers before- and after school care, summer camps, and school break camps. Parents' nights out are offered once a month.

The Community Center's art classes are held at the Bathhouse Art Studio, a beautiful venue located on Alki Beach.

Baby Power Forever Kids offers preschool classes, parents' night out programs, birthday parties, and parent/child play and enrichment classes.

Ballard offers before- and afterschool care, toddler programs, dance classes (creative ballet, pre-ballet for young children, jazz dance, and dance workshops), piano, pottery, youth sports programs, an urban 4-H program for ages five-19, an active teen program (Saturday night concerts, service learning, and arts exploration), intermittent language and nature classes for all ages, and day camps for children and teens.

Chickadee Music Together is an early childhood music program for children ages newborn to five and their parents and caregivers. Music Together classes bring families together to experience the joy of music through songs, rhythm chants, instrument play and movement activities in a relaxed, playful atmosphere. The program features a new song collection every semester for three years.

The Community Center at Mercer View is open daily and offers beautiful views of Lake Washington and the Cascades. The two-story facility features meeting rooms, an arts and crafts area, an indoor art gallery, health, fitness, and dance rooms, a game room with foosball, board games, pool, and cable TV, free Wi-fi, and a children's play area.

Crescendo Artistic Environment School is a non-profit organization that offers a preschool program and before and after school care. The program is influenced by Reggio Emilia, Perkins School of the Arts and Montessori School - USA, but places a stronger emphasis on music, dancing, drumming, and cultural diversity. Dance offerings include West African, Flamenco-Gypsy, American and Russian Ballet, and free movement. Vocal and instrumental music are available, along with music theory and musicology. Classes also include Atelier, Yoga and Qi, and Cultures and Languages.

Delridge offers dance classes, teen programs, preschool programs, before- and after-school programs, summer day camps, and computer literacy classes.

The non-profit chorus offers singers ages five-18 training in musicianship and vocal skills, choral discipline, choral etiquette, and showmanship. The choirs also perform in professionally produced shows. The director is Kathleen Higgins. A limited number of scholarships available.

Girls in grades K-two can join the Training Choir (no audition necessary); girls in grades three-five can audition for the Select Choir, and both boys and girls ages 11-14 can join audition for Eastside Youth Ensemble. Edmonds Parks and Recreation offers a variety of recreation classes for children and adults. Children's programs include gymnastics, music, dance, babysitting, and etiquette classes. Summer day camp opportunities are also available.

This weird museum's 140,000 square feet includes galleries dedicated to music artifacts and exhibits, interactive exhibits, and the soaring Sky Church Concert Hall. Most exhibits here won't appeal to kids under five, although the interior of the museum is so visually arresting - an explosion of shiny surfaces, curving lines, and varied planes - that it's possible to keep a toddler busy just looking around.

If you have young children in tow, look for the Speaking Orbs on the second floor, a musical sculpture that plays when you wave your hands over shiny metal spheres. The sculpture Roots and Branches, a ceiling-high structure hung with more guitars than you've ever seen in your life, evoked a wow from our toddler, who also liked listening to the music available from several computer stations clustered around the sculpture.

Kids who are interested in music will find lots here to engage their imaginations. They can play instruments and record music in the Sound Lab, take a walk through modern musical history in the Milestones exhibit, and learn everything they ever wanted to know about Jimi Hendrix. Family-friendly programs here include the popular Family Days offered the third Saturday of each month from 11am-3pm, with activities inlcuding art projects, music demonstrations, special tours, and workshops. The pricey, multidisciplinary Experience Arts Camp for aspiring artists ages 5-16, is held during summer break. Heart Soul 'n Musik is a music studio featuring Kindermusik classes for ages 0-5 years and private piano instruction for all ages.
