The Beehive Science & Technology Academy is an open enrollment, tuition-free public charter school. It offers a college preparatory program with a focus on math, science, and technology. Students also receive educational instruction in humanities and social science. Upon opening in 2005, the school served grades seven and eight. One grade is added each year until the school serves grades seven through 12 for the 2009/2010 school year.

Just above Midway, Utah, lies Soldier Hollow at Wasatch Mountain State Park. Athletes of world-class ability and weekend recreationists enjoy the facility on a year-round basis. The facility features a 31 kilometer trail system for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter, and mountain biking, hiking, and equestrian use in the summer.

Tubing Hill: Boasting the longest tubing run in Utah, the hill has 1,2000-foot sliding lanes with lift service. Lights allow for tubing at night, and a sound system fills the air with music. The hill is open mid December to early April on Mon-Fri 12n-8pm, Sat & holidays 10am-8pm, and Sun 12n-4pm. Tickets cost $17 for anyone ages seven and over, and are good for a two hour session. Kids ages three to six tube for $10. Children ages two and under aren't allowed on the lift, but they are offered free tube use on a small slope, with parental supervision. To ensure maximum fun, Soldier Hollow limits the number of tubing tickets sold. It is advisable to pre-purchase tickets, especially on Saturdays and holidays. Cross-Country Skiing: Courses range in difficulty from easy to challenging (the same ones used during the Olympics), and are great for first time skiers, cross over downhill skiers, and expert skaters or classic "striders". Trails are open seven days a week, from mid December to early April. Hours are 9am-4:30pm. Trail passes cost $17 for adults, $14 for seniors, $9 for juniors (ages 7-17), and free for children under age seven. Season passes are available. See website for more information.

Biathalon Range: The target range is used for a variety of summer and winter two-sport activities.

Rossignol Demo Center: A full service center offering skate and ski rentals.

Cross-Country Ski School: Both group and private lessons are available, for adults and juniors of any experience level. Learner packages combine expert instruction, rental equipment, and a trail pass, all for $29 for juniors, or $39 for adults.

Sheepdog Championships: Hailed as North America's premier sheep herding competition, the event showcases the skills and tactics of some of the world's best sheepdogs and their handlers. The competition is held during the four days of Labor Day weekend, and offers lots of kid-friendly activities, food booths, Scottish Highland Games, and Back of the Wasatch Fiberfest.

The Lodge: A full service, rustic Douglas fir day lodge offering ski rentals, souvenirs, accessories, food, and beverages. The lodge can be reserved for weddings and other special events year-round.

The Yurt: Located along the trail system, the yurt serves as a comfortable way station where people can rest, warm-up, and listen to music.

Soldier Hollow Equestrian Center: In partnership with Rocky Mountain Outfitters, Soldier Hollow now offers year-round equestrian adventures. Trail rides leave daily and are available throughout the year. Also available are chuck wagon dinners, lunch outings, wagon rides, and sleigh rides. Golf Course: A championship, 36-hole facility. Two 18-hole courses offer challenging play for golfers of all abilities, as well as amazing views of the Heber Valley and Mount Timpanogos. Facility includes a clubhouse and a restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Green fees cost $38 and include a cart.

Mountain Biking: Bike rentals and helmets are available. Bikers ride the same trails used by the Olympic skiers. Trails are open from early May until the end of October. Check online for information about mountain bike races and events held at Soldier Hollow.

Snowshoeing: Trail passes are available for $5 for adults, and $3 for youth. Rentals cost $5.

Charter School: The Soldier Hollow Charter School is one of a kind, offering education for students in grades one through eight, amid a world-renowned trail system, and skiing several days a week. Admission is by lottery. For information on the school, call 435.654.1347.

Horizonte High School is an alternative high school, and is part of the Salt Lake City School District. It offers students a year-round schedule, flexible scheduling, technical training programs, and small class sizes.

The Life Arts Center has programs for people ages 15 months and up. The Creative Learning program is a preschool & kindergarten program for children ages 2 1/2 to six years old. The children in the program experience music, art, drama, socialization, and free choosing. Through all of the "playing" children are actively learning math, reading, numbers, science, and emotional literacy.

Modern/Creative Dance classes are taught at the center for children ages 2 1/2 to 18. Art classes are offered for anyone ages five and up, including adults. Adult dance classes are available as well.

Summer camps at the center are very popular. The camps combine art education with science, math, reading, dance, music, drama, and art. Children ages 15 months to 11 years old may participate.

Daycare is offered Mon-Fri from 9am to 4pm. Children can be brought early or picked up late, but extra fees apply. Parents are required to provide diapers, wipes, and food for their children.

Small World Child Care Center is a licensed child care center featuring a secured facility, before and afterschool care, half or full day programs, four large outdoor playgrounds, meals (breakfast, lunch, and snack), indoor gymnasiums, and transportation to local grade schools. Preschool is held every day for ages three and up, and computers are available for kids in that same age range.

The Children's Academy is the kind of child care center that every parent would love to take their child to. It's clean, bright, and cheerful, with lots of dedicated caregivers and a seemingly endless supply of cool toys, both inside and outside. The space the center occupies is huge, covering 13,000 square feet. The door to the center is secured with a code box, allowing entry to only parents and staff. Each room has video surveillance, and the center offers internet access so parents can check to see what their children are up to while the parents are away at work.

The children are taught a variety of age appropriate activities. Classes at the center include music, art, dance, gymnastics, karate, languages, computers, and woodworking. All of the classes are included with the cost of tuition. Tuition also includes daily meals (breakfast and lunch) and two snacks.

Fees for the full time care at the center vary by age. Care can be arranged for partial weeks as well. Afterschool care is available for school aged children. The rates are subject to an annual increase, from 1% to 3%. Call or stop in to get specific fees for your child.

It's always a good idea to drop in unannounced to check out any day care center you are considering for your child.

SLCC offers more than 100 vocational and academic programs serving a diverse student body at 15 locations throughout the Salt Lake valley and in neighboring Tooele. It even has an e-campus, providing access to online courses.

"Slick" Science Workshops for kids ages 11 to 17 are offered at the Redwood Campus every summer. Younger campers build a camera a use it to learn about the physics of light, build a working windmill and learn about sustainable architecture, and take part in other activities. Older campers learn about forensic science and use it to solve a mystery on campus. The week-long camps run late June through late July, and cost $125. Mention GoCityKids to receive a $10 discount. Kids on Campus is summer program for younger children, offered at the Draper Center campus - 12441 South 900 East. The four-day camps run during the month of July for kids ages six through 11. Topics vary by age, but can include public speaking/debate for older children, yoga, dance, reading/math, sign language, martial arts, etc. All courses are designed to help children build self-confidence.
