Classes

The Miami-Dade Parks offer afterschool care weekdays during the academic year for Miami-Dade Public Schools. Activities include homework help, indoor/outdoor play, arts & crafts, and sports. Children from first grade up are invited to participate.

Sports programs include flag football, volleyball, basketball, track and field, soccer, tennis, and softball offered in rotating three month periods depending on the season. These programs are offered for children ages eight through 15 years. The schedule of practices and games and particular sports varies depending on the location, so call the phone number above or check the website for more information.

Summer camp programs are also offered.

Like the colored paints on an artistic palette, Educational Counceling Specialists recognizes that all learners have a set of unique and colorful attributes. ECS identifies your child's attributes and establishes their individual learning needs.

ECS works with children, adolescents, and adults, but concentrates on students in their primary or secondary stage of academic life. Typically, these students are in Kindergarten through 10th grade and ages five to 16 years old.

Providing interactive, hands-on exhibits and educational sessions for children of all ages, this is a fun place to visit.

Always on exhibit is the EarthWorks section that teaches about conservation and recycling. Take a passport for the Global Village and visit an architectural dig in Israel, learn origami in a Japanese house, play in an African Village (complete with about 20 drums of varying sizes), and create works of art in a Central/South American marketplace (stencils, etching, and cutting are some of the skills involved).

A variety of art-related classes are available weekdays for all ages. Details are available on the museum website.

The museum also offers birthday party packages that include invitations, hands-on art workshops, party favors, and - for an extra charge - pizza. Families supply the cake, decorations, and general party supplies.

Membership is worthwhile if you plan to go multiple times and participate in classes, and it's a must for hosting a birthday party at the museum. Family Membership is $65 per year, and includes two adults plus up to four dependent children in one household under 18 years of age.
Grandparents Membership is $100 per year, and includes two grandparents plus all dependant grandchildren under 18 years of age, plus two guest passes.

U Create It is an arts & crafts studio that provides tools and supplies to create any kind of project - from painting a canvas to mosaic art forms.

Drop-off classes for kids are available, and the shop hosts birthday parties and holds an annual summer camp for kids ages seven and up, too.

Art Studio offers afternoon classes for children that range from sculpture to mosaics, cartooning, jewelry, sculpture, painting, and drawing. In addition to stressing creativity, the studio's classes help with the development of motor skills and concentration, and are particularly suited for children and adults with disabilities.

Summer Camp: Weekly day-long classes in ceramic, sculpture, mosaics, photography, beading, and more are offered for children ages six through 14, beginning each June.

Afternoon classes are also offered in mosaics, cartooning, painting, and drawing Monday through Friday from 3pm-5pm.

Safe Sitter is a national program designed to prepare children to babysit. Classes include basic childcare skills, safety techniques, and emergency procedures. Participants have to pass written and practical tests before they are certified. The cost of the program varies from $25-$45 depending on the format of instruction.

Parents can call to register their young adolescent
children or babysitters for the training.

Amenities included at the center are an auditorium, dance room, a full-size gymnasium with bleacher seating, weight room, game room and kitchen.

All are available for rental.

Outdoor facilities include basketball and paddleball courts and an 80-yard soccer/football field.

The center hosts camps, civic meetings, youth leagues and clinics, aerobic and computer classes.

The South Miami Community Center is a two-story, 23,000-square-foot facility featuring a gymnasium, fitness center, arts-and-craft and multipurpose spaces, classrooms, a computer lab, childcare facilities, and a small theater.

The fitness center is open 16 hours a day; multipurpose classrooms feature classes in dance, karate, fencing, and more.

Activities at City Streets, a 36,000 square-foot facility, include an indoor skate park, rock climbing wall, laser tag arena, extreme baskeball (Slamball) court, game room, and bungee trampoline jumping.

A WiFi cafe is also available.
